There exists an ancient elven proverb, dating before the time of man. Life and death, like day and night, meet at a point where they blend into one. It is that brief moment when anything is possible.

There was a time when four sparks of life burned brighter than the sun itself. Megan was born with power, Lucien born with station. Autumn was born full of life, while Nathan was entwined with death.

Peace has come and gone... The conflicts of old have returned-rejuvenated and driven. This is the beginning of the end. The children of Karn have come of age, and now they will take part in shaping the fate of Illyia.

Will they join forces, or with blood will they be divided?

Kevin James Breaux's sequel to Soul Born kicks off twenty years after the first story ends. There is enough back story to keep the 'uninitiated' in the loop, but it can also be read as a stand-alone.

From the get-go, I was hooked (maybe because I'm already an 'initiated'), and had me up well past my bedtime to see 'what happens next' to the ensemble cast. It was good to see Tala (the Elf) again and the return of one of my favourites, Zian, the werewolf. Back too in one form or the other is Opal, the misguided mage. And then there is the new cast, each with unique personalities that jump out the page and drive the story forward.

I look forward to the next in the sequel.

Blood Divided Kevin James Breaux 9781937051242 Books Reviews

I liked the writing style though there were a noticeable amount of typos or misused words such as weary in place of wary. My problem with the book was that it seemed dis-jointed at times and the characters didn't always behave the way you would expect a real person to behave in a given situation. For example, while the town was being invaded by an army, one of the main characters is napping and another goes on a picnic with her lover right after she saw her mother being killed and while the killer is still loose and looking for her.

Some of the characters are likeable but everyone seems Bi-polar or Schizo in the book based on their comments and actions. One character is considered gentle and kind-hearted yet she slaps another character for saying something she didn't like and then goes back to being kind again.

The ending was disappointing as it was left wide open for a sequel with no thought of any kind of closure. Literally one main character is stabbed, the town is overrun....the end

The writer has alot of potential but he needs to reign in his style and make the characters less aimless and confusing. I never got a handle on what character was playing what part in the book and had a hard time distinguishing the good from the bad characters sometimes. With the exception of Megan and Vashe, I can't say I really liked any of them I never got a feel for what the motivation was of many of the characters and at times there seemed to be little point to the story.

I felt like the author was setting the entire book up for the sequel and never really focused on what was going on in the book itself. Sequels are great but a reader needs to have a reason to read it and if the original story never goes anywhere whats the point.
I may be tempted to read the sequel in the hopes that the author will get his focus and tighten up the characters and their purpose a bit. I feel that it may be a good book for $.99 or so but $4.99 is too much for it in my opinion. I gave it 3 stars more for the potential of any future books by the author than I did for the book itself. It was a good first try but the Author needs to take it up a notch if he plans on making a living selling books.
Kevin Breaux's first book in this series, Soul Born, had such a unique twist that I couldn't wait to see what was in store for book two. Blood Divided did not disappoint. In Soul Born, we were introduced to the battle hero, Karn, the evil sorceress, Opal, and the beautiful elf, Tala. From this love triangle came, Megan and Nathan, Karn's children with Opal, and Autumn and Lucien, Karn's children with Tala. This is their story.
Breaux's characters are more fleshed out in this sequel. He gives multiple perspectives of the story from the viewpoints of various characters, thus the reader forms a bond with each character and is genuinely concerned for their welfare. The author also gives us a truly malevolent antagonist. Khaos is an evil killer that forces the reader to despise him and want to see him defeated. At the same time, however, the author gives the reader multiple looks into the inner psyche of Khaos, which provides clues as to why this man had grown into such a villain. Breaux has a penchant for strong women and continues that trend in Blood Divided. Megan easily became my favorite character because not only does she have a good heart, but she is strong and courageous. Also, like her mother, she has some sweet magic skills that allow her to lay the smack down on the enemy.
Amidst all the family drama of Karn's children, there is a political storm cloud that threatens to plunge Illyia into total war. This further complicates the issues facing the children of Karn as each child is forced to take sides and figure out how to survive in the ensuing turmoil. There are some frenetic and engaging action scenes involved in this plotline that keep the story moving and had me turning pages frantically, anxious to see what happened next.
While this book is obviously building towards another installment, it's not done in a way as to leave the reader without any sense of finality for this particular part of the story. The pacing feels right, and the reader is left wanting more but not feeling like the book ends too abruptly.
Blood Divided is a solid, well-written, fantasy novel that will draw you in and hold on tight from beginning to end. Bring on part three Mr. Breaux!
