Who Is Alexander Grothendieck? Part 1 Anarchy Winfried Scharlau 9783842340923 Books

This was truly a special find. I bought this for a mathematician genius friend of mine who is fascinated by Grothendiek and manifolds... he had no idea people were translating the German stories of his life. This is a treasure to him... I hope the see more sections translated into English soon.

Who Is Alexander Grothendieck? Part 1 Anarchy Winfried Scharlau 9783842340923 Books Reviews

The description says "English translation of the first of four parts of a biography, treating family background, parents and youth of the mathematician Alexander Grothendieck." The competent translation of Scharlau's text has been done by Melissa Schneps. This book is not identical with and far more detailed than the article with the same title by the same author that appeared in Notices AMS.
This is a fascinating story of the lives and historical background of Grothendieck's parents, and how he came to burst upon the mathematical world. The research has been detailed and complex, and the picture of these turbulent times is very well presented. It is of interest not only to mathematicians, but is of especial interest to them also for giving clues as to the character and insights of an extraordinary figure in mathematics.
I heard from W Scharlau from the presentation he made at the occasion the the 50 Years anniversary of the IHES, in France, and which can be still viewed (although with poor image quality) at [...]
As soon as I learned that this first volume was translated into English, I jumped on it.

This first volume covers the life of Grotendieck's parents, and Grothendieck's youth. At this stage already, everything about this family was out of the ordinary...

This part is indeed essential to portray and understand Grothendieck's bold character, fearless and rebel to any authority.

Although it may seem strange for a non-mathematician, this bold character explains in a way Grothendieck's achievements, because you have to be bold to explore territories noone explored before, and fight against problems which noone managed to solve before.

I am looking forward for the other volumes to come, covering the rest of Grothendieck's life.

We support you Mr Scharlau ! (and the translator Leila Schneps) . We are eager to know the rest of the story !

NB it seems that A Grothendieck is still alive. he lives in the South of France, with almost no contact with the outside world. There is a controversy on how to handle the boxes full of mathematical papers he left at the University of Montpellier, given the fact he expressly forbid anybody to publish it..... probably enough to keep several generations of future mathematicians busy ....
Provides substance to the storied background that gave the world Grothendieck as well as telling of the dangers of anarchy in the early part of the twentieth century, particularly in revolutionary Russia and the turbulent 20's and 30's in Germany.
This is a very interesting and well written book; very informative. It primarily discusses the life of Grothendieck's parents and his childhood . A lot of history of anarchist movements in Russia/Germany/Spain are discussed. I'm anxiously awaiting the rest of the series!
